GREATEST CRIMES OF BABYLON – III
The next of the Greatest Crimes of Babylon is the violation of the eternal covenant of circumcision. “IN ADDITION TO ALL YOUR OTHER DETESTABLE PRACTICES, YOU BROUGHT FOREIGNERS UNCIRCUMCISED IN HEART AND FLESH INTO MY SANCTUARY, DESECRATING MY TEMPLE….. AND YOU BROKE MY COVENANT.” (Ezek 44:7)
Let us read Gen 17:7-14, the covenant of circumcision as it is, “I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you……… This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep. Every male among you shall be circumcised! You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be sign of the covenant between Me and you. For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner – those who are not your offspring. Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. MY COVENANT IN YOUR FLESH IS TO BE AN EVERLASTING COVENANT. ANY UNCIRCUMCISED MALE, WHO HAS NOT BEEN CIRCUMCISED IN THE FLESH, WILL BE CUT OFF FROM HIS PEOPLE; HE HAS BROKEN MY COVENANT.”
UNDERSTANDING THE COVENANT OF CIRCUMCISION
It is a well ascertained fact that God speaks to us in the language we understand and uses choice vocabulary that we would easily relate to as people of the flesh. Just as it is testified that He leads us by ‘chords of human kindness’ (Hos 11:4), by feeding us, clothing us and meeting all our needs – the way we understand it best. As such, in order to teach us how terrible ‘Unfaithfulness to God’ is He uses the words adultery, prostitution, consort etc. to convey His warnings across. We think in terms of flesh, and therefore we never understand unless these words that are flesh-related is employed to teach us the seriousness of our crimes.
So, to begin with, let us LEARN THAT THE COVENANT OF CIRCUMCISION IS THE COVENANT OF FAITHFULNESS. The history of the fall of man began with his unfaithfulness to God. And the one who is unfaithful to God cannot be faithful to anybody else – whether it is to his parents, his brethren, his spouse, his friends, his colleagues, his employers, whoever it may be. This is the covenant between God and every male who is circumcised, a sign that the child or the person circumcised will be trained in faithfulness towards God and men.
HAVING FAILED TO UNDERSTAND THIS, EVEN MEN WHO ADVOCATE CIRCUMCISION WITH GREAT ARROGANCE AND SHOW OF PURITY, FLOUNDER MISERABLY AND MAKE LAUGHING STOCKS OF THEMSELVES BEFORE THE NATIONS. (For instance, read Ezek 22:3-14)
Why? Because even though they pride themselves in the suggestive purification, the covenant in reality came to be received and acknowledged in the periphery of the flesh alone, no different from any of those who are compelled to do it for medical reasons. [As such, it is no mere coincidence that such a surgery has become commonplace now!!!!] THESE MEN NEVER CIRCUMCISE THEIR HEARTS, WHICH IS THE ONLY WAY GOD’S LAWS CAN MANIFEST IN OUR LIVES, AND THEREFORE THEY REMAIN UNFAITHFUL BOTH TO GOD AND MEN TILL DATE.
CIRCUMCISION SYMBOLIC OF ‘THE COVENANT OF BLOOD’ OF GOD’S FAITHFULNESS:
When man was discovered unfaithful, God made the redemption of man possible by His Faithfulness – which is manifested by His covenant of the Blood with us (refer Matt 26:28, Heb 12:24, Zech 9:11).
This is therefore the Covenant of Faithfulness without which no one (particularly no male as their faithfulness has to signify itself, in addition, by the circumcision of the flesh) can hope to remain in the fellowship of God either in this generation or in the next – yes, it is for the generations to come. Hence it is called the eternal or everlasting covenant between God and man.
[Note: In spiritual terms, the generations are chiefly classified into two – the present ‘GENERATION OF THE WICKED’ and the eternal ‘GENERATION OF THE RIGHTEOUS OR OF THE REGENERATION’. The generation of the wicked is the generation of the present world which is further classified into two owing to the two nature of life that will exist here – one before the reign of Christ and the next during the reign of Christ. And the generation of the regeneration is of course in the new heaven and new earth where everything is regnerated or made new. Hence, the words ‘for generations to come’.]
Just as Jesus testifies, “He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the One who sent him is a man of truth, there is nothing false about him.” (Jn 7:18). And, once again by His example, the One Who is sent of God, Who is the Truth Himself, is not only subjected to the Covenant of Faithfulness at the prescribed age (Lk 2:21), BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, REMAINS FAITHFUL AT ALL AGE. So that He is called the Faithful and True (Rev 19:11). [It explains why God chose and set apart Israel as the nation for Jesus to be born – BECAUSE THOUGH THE COVENANT OF FAITHFULNESS WAS GIVEN TO ABRAHAM TO BE OBSERVED BY ONE AND ALL, MEN REMAIN UNFAITHFUL, EVEN IN ISRAEL. HENCE, THE CORRECTION OR THE TRUE EXEMPLIFICATION OF FAITHFULNESS HAS TO BEGIN RIGHT THERE SO THAT BOTH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND THE REST OF THE WORLD MAY LEARN FROM IT.]
Satan has infiltrated many texts opposing this covenant in the Bible that without getting to the root of the matter one cannot be convinced of the Truth. And since churches as a rule reject the teachings of God and obey the teachings of men, they have all without exception taught and advocated its violation.
As a result, if the churches today find their hands full with sexual immoralities and depraved minds from priests down to the most ordinary of laymen, they have only themselves to blame. Not to mention the wrath of God that they have invited upon themselves. “…. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of Truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping. ………………….. They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done….. With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed – an accursed brood! They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam….who loved the wages of wickedness……. These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity…. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the SACRED COMMAND THAT WAS PASSED ON TO THEM.” (2 Pet 2:1-21).
Like the unfaithful Lot, they choose their own path and live among the depraved and are quick to lead their daughters in the wrong way – read Gen 19:8, “Look, I have two daughters……… Do with them….” Or like the Benjamite tribe of Israel who were almost entirely wiped out because of their terrible deeds (Judg 19:23-30). The Word of God says, “DO NOT DEGRADE YOUR DAUGHTER BY MAKING HER A PROSTITUTE, OR THE LAND WILL TURN TO PROSTITUTION AND BE FILLED WITH WICKEDNESS.” (Lev 19:29)
Churches are all guilty of ENCOURAGING AND PROMOTING PROSTITUTION by their unfaithfulness to the sacred command of God even as they go about gloating over the wickedness of their people under such fancy names as dating or courting or the supra-religious sounding ones like ‘romance and redemption’ or ‘seeking the Boaz blessing’!!!!!
HOW WILL THEY WASH THEMSELVES OF THE GUILT OF INTRODUCING CONTRADICTORY TEACHINGS, PARTICULARLY THE SONG OF SONGS, ALL OF WHICH OPPOSES THE SACRED COMMAND OF GOD? HOW WILL THEY WASH THEMSELVES OF THE GUILT OF RUINING SCORES AND SCORES OF LIVES EACH DAY?
The Word of God declares, “..Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution and your daughters-in-law to adultery. I WILL NOT PUNISH YOUR DAUGHTERS WHEN THEY TURN TO PROSTITUTION, NOR YOUR DAUGHTERS-IN-LAW WHEN THEY COMMIT ADULTERY, because the men themselves consort with harlots and sacrifice with shrine prostitutes – A PEOPLE WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING WILL COME TO RUIN!” (Hos 4:13-14).
True enough, when the teachers of the law and the Pharisees wanted to stone an adulterous woman they had brought before Jesus, HE DID NOT CONDEMN HER. Instead He said to her, “THEN NEITHER DO I CONDEMN YOU. GO NOW AND LEAVE YOUR LIFE OF SIN.” (Jn 8:11). And it definitely does not come as a surprise that everyone who had brought her, go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left. For he had said to them, “IF ANY ONE OF YOU IS WITHOUT SIN, LET HIM BE THE FIRST TO THROW A STONE AT HER.” (Jn 8:7-11).
THE HISTORY OF THE COVENANT OF CIRCUMCISION
The history of the covenant of circumcision goes back to Gen 2:24 – which declares the perfect oneness of man and his wife. It is that which is symbolic of the perfect Oneness of the Triune God and the perfect Oneness between God and man in the eternal kingdom of God.
FAITHFULNESS IS THE LIFELINE OF ONENESS AND PERFECT TRANSPARENCY THE CONSEQUENCE OF IT (The reason why everyone and everything in heaven is transparent and reflects the glory of God in its fullness.). WITHOUT ONENESS, ONE CANNOT SURVIVE EITHER IN FLESH OR IN THE SPIRIT. The following will serve as perfect guidelines:
- Perfect Trinity vs Imperfect Trinity: In this context, let us understand the difference between the perfect Trinity of God and the imperfect trinity of man, since his fall. We have learned that the Triune God does not think or do anything apart from One Another. GOD IS THE PERFECT EMBODIMENT OF ONENESS. Even when His Triune Identity was revealed to man Individually – first the Triune fullness in the Father, followed by the Triune fullness in the Son and finally the Triune fullness in the Spirit. However, the same is not true of man.
Jesus describes our shattered oneness to us most effectively in this all-too-familiar remonstration, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. THE SPIRIT IS WILLING, BUT THE BODY IS WEAK.” (Matt 26:41).
That is right, if one would only trouble oneself to look within oneself, one will recognize the disunity that is present there. One only has the imperfect trinity combination of body, soul and spirit where each one goes its separate way. So that man is a slave to his own disoriented self, and he is totally unable to overcome them. It is impossible for us to bring them into perfect alignment or oneness, without the Spirit of God – hence the irrefutable truth which declares ‘The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
THEREFORE, WHEN WE SUBMIT TO THE SPIRIT OF GOD, HE WILL FIRST HELP US REGAIN THE LOST ONENESS WITHIN US BY BRINGING OUR BODY, SOUL AND SPIRIT OF LIFE INTO UNITY WITH HIS WILL. THEN HE WILL HELP US RESTORE THE LOST ONENESS BETWEEN US. UNTIL SUCH TIME THAT THE LOST ONENESS BETWEEN GOD AND OURSELVES IS RESTORED TO PERFECTION WHICH WILL SHOW FORTH WHEN WE BEGIN TO DWELL WITH HIM IN HIS KINGDOM. Therefore it is but inevitable that those who have not been thus restored will be left out!
- The example of righteous man Job: Let us learn from Job who testified, “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a girl. For what is man’s lot from God above, his heritage from the Almighty on high?” Job 31:1-2. His faithfulness continued in every realm of his life. Again, for instance, read Job 29 and the rest of chapter 31. It is the testimony of the man of whom God Himself has testified in these words: “…There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” (Job 1:8).
This is the reason, Jesus warns the uncircumcised of heart, “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matt 5:28). The circumcision of flesh must go hand in hand with the circumcision of heart, “If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.” (Matt 5:28-29).
- The spiritual man vs the carnal man: The perfect ‘Spiritual Oneness’ cannot be fathomed by a man of the flesh because he or she is uncircumcised in heart. But those that are spiritual will understand and know that it is this perfect and spiritual oneness we are called to grow into with God and fellow children of God.
However, the carnal men who cannot understand or acknowledge this, turn their backs on the SACRED COMMAND OF GOD that was passed to them and incur His wrath. For example, read 1 Cor 10:8, “We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did – and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.” And, remember how God did not spare the ancient world when He brought the flood on its ungodly people (whose wickedness was no different from that of the present world) – read Gen 6:1-3, “When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God (meaning servants of God) saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, ‘My Spirit will not contend with man forever…’”
ABRAHAM, THE PATRIARCH OF CIRCUMCISION:
Now, let us look to Abraham through whom the covenant came to be passed on, and let us understand how Israel prided themselves in the man and the patriarchy he brought about, but not in the God he was called to represent or Whose holiness he was called to pass on.
How would they? For, Abraham himself failed to understand them or acknowledge them until very late. As a result, he had become instrumental in bringing about severe repercussions upon his people along with his blessings:
- For instance, after king Melchizedek gave Abraham the prophecy of the Lord’s sacrificial death, the Lord appeared to him and blessed him, Gen 15:1, “….’Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your Shield, your very great Reward.” Now, here is God telling him that God Himself is his great Reward. But all he could say in response was “I remain childless, I have no heir!” (Gen 15:2-3).
What followed is the faithful Promise of God and the assurances thereof (Gen 15:4-6). But also the inevitable repercussions of the wrong choice that was made by him – literally rejecting ‘the Son’ for his own son of the flesh – Gen 15:13-15 & 18-21, “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age.”
- Yet, once again, having failed to reckon his folly, he listened to his wife Sarah who being ignorant both of the ‘Promise of God’ and her own calling offered him her maid to sire a son for himself through her. And, Abraham not only raised a son outside the will of God but also began to raise enemies for his people even before the promised nation of his people was born. Not to mention the added contributions of Lot in this regard!!
This is the time when God visits him again and corrects him before giving him the everlasting covenant of the circumcision, read Gen 17:1, “…..the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I AM GOD ALMIGHTY; WALK BEFORE ME FAITHFULLY AND BE BLAMELESS…..” God then brings about a renewal into his life, even changes his name and changes his wife’s name as signs of meaningful renewal for both of them. God gives him the covenant of circumcision with the reassurance that this covenant will serve as a sign between them.
- Glad of the promises but still blissfully slow to understanding, he tried to laugh it off when God laid emphasis on Sarah’s calling and said that it was through her he was to have the promised son to raise a nation for God. It is most unfortunate that even then Abraham failed to acknowledge God’s Word and insisted the blessing may come through Ishmael, his son born of Hagar the slave-woman! Besides, he continued to keep Sarah in the dark, but for the divine intervention of God.
- Therefore, though Abraham was prompt in obedience and had every male member in his vast household circumcised, he continued in his unfaithfulness towards his wife Sarah. Once again, he repeated the same mistake he had committed before his circumcision when he had put her very life in danger while passing through Egypt. So that, once again, it was God who intervened on Sarah’s behalf and rescued her from Abimelech, king of Gerar.
- Likewise, after Sarah died, he not only remarried but also kept concubines and had children through all of them who’d all eventually turn against his son of the covenant. Even though he comforted himself with the knowledge that he had provided for them sufficiently and sent them all on their way, away from Isaac to ensure his safety and well-being, to this day the nation of Israel remains in loggerheads with all their estranged brethren. As nations multiplied and spread around them, the number of their enemies also continued to multiply. For they only continued to break God’s covenants as their fathers had done before them.
Like Jesus testifies, in order to obey circumcision, they would even break the Sabbath if need be (Jn 7:23), but when it comes to actually discerning the right from wrong, they are unable to make right judgment and continue to judge by mere appearances (Jn 7:24). So that, even though God would faithfully forewarn, they will insist on following the ways of the world and demand for a son, a king, a judge, a leader, a priest, a spokesperson etc. from among themselves and reject Him altogether. Read Gen 15:1-3, Ex 3:7, 15, Ex 15:25-16:8, Num 11:4-6, Deut 18:15-16, Judg 2:16-19, 1 Sam 8:4-9 etc. etc. Particularly, 1 Sam 8:7, “And the Lord told him, ‘Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, BUT THEY HAVE REJECTED ME AS THEIR KING…’.” Just as it is testified of them in Ezek 2:3, “….. they and their fathers have been in revolt against Me to this very day.”
BUT ARE WE ANY DIFFERENT?
We do the same. Here are a few prominent examples:
- When God speaks to us and says, “I am your Husband.”, we fast and pray for the perfect person, the perfect Mr or Miss Right instead.
- And who among us have repented of our fathers’ sins and stopped seeking son or sons in our flesh? Are we not guilty of rejecting the Son instead of reconciling with Him truly? Refer Ps 2:2, “Kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for His wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.”
- When God proposes that we exchange our wearisome yoke with that of His, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”, we not only insist on keeping our yokes but also demand that they be turned lighter and easier for us to bear!
- God says, ‘Seek His kingdom and His righteousness.’, but just like everybody else we seek the ‘American dream’ or some other kingdom of our own. It is hardly surprising that we lose sight of His righteousness altogether in the process.
We insist on having our way. We choose everything by ourselves – our career, our spouse, our education, our house, our car, our church, our shepherd, our kingdom, even our laws and twisted righteousness AND REJECT HIM AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS ALTOGETHER. And then when we run into troubled waters, WHICH WE MOST CERTAINLY WILL, we are all most likely to blame God or forsake Him entirely or repent and call out to Him when it is too late! (eg. Lk 16:23-24).
THE COVENANT OF FAITHFULNESS EVOLVING INTO THE COVENANT OF BLOOD
Read Ps 18:25-26, “To the faithful You show Yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd.”
As such, let us examine for ourselves and see if the sacred covenant of circumcision is indeed a part of the law that we are so eager to overcome in the name of law? Has it not been given as an everlasting covenant and as a sign of faithfulness? Does not Christ Himself testify that the law was given through Moses (Jn 1:17) but circumcision came from the patriarchs (Jn 7:22)? Let the words of Paul himself (whose name is the most misused to spread false teachings) admonish you and warn you, for I quote 2 Tim 2:11-13, “Here is a trustworthy saying: ‘If we died with Him, we will also live with Him; If we endure, we will also reign with Him; If we disown Him, He will also disown us; If we are faithless, He will remain faithful, for He cannot disown Himself’.”
Yes, God cannot disown Himself. For He is Faithful and True even if we are not. He is Faithful to provide for each one of us and give rain and sunshine to the wicked and the righteous alike. And, because He is Faithful and True, He will keep His Promise and Come to receive His own whether we are ready or not. But, we will certainly have no one else to blame when we are found unfaithful and are received not!
Therefore, let us learn from Zipporah, Jethro’s daughter and Moses’ wife, who had the divine insight to act quickly and save both Moses and her son when she renewed herself and the son by the Covenant of Faithfulness that since then has also come to be known as the Covenant of Blood. Understand its spiritual implication in her words: “… the Lord met Moses, and was about to kill him. But Zipporah took off a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin and touched Moses’ feet with it. ‘SURELY YOU ARE A BRIDEGROOM OF BLOOD TO ME,’ she said. So the Lord let him alone…” (Ex 4:25-26)
Here is a Midianite, quick to perceive the wrong she was perpetuating by withholding her son from obeying God’s sacred command, and she was wise enough to act upon it quickly thus reviving her own consecration and commitment along with that of her son’s while also saving Moses’ life (Ex 4:24-26). [Let us also likewise ensure Jesus Christ is the Bridegroom of Blood to each one of us and to the offspring He gave us as we circumcise out hearts to be faithful to Him, today, and may all men who are hearkened by the Spirit obey and circumcise themselves in flesh as well.]
However, it is most unfortunate that when Moses led the people of Israel through the wilderness, he failed to lead the people according to the Covenant of Faithfulness. As a result, he along with all those he led failed to enter the promised land. Only their descendants did BUT in the same manner as Zipporah had done by reviving the Covenant with the Covenant of Blood. Read Josh 5:2-9 “………All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the desert during the journey from Egypt had not. The Israelites had moved about in the desert forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the Lord. For the Lord had sworn to them that they would not see the land that He had solemnly promised their fathers…. So He raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way…….. Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.’ So the place has been called Gilgal to this day.”
BUT WHERE IS THE GILGAL OF TODAY? WHERE CAN ONE RENEW ONE’S COVENANT OF FAITHFULNESS WITH THE COVENANT OF BLOOD?
One will not find it either in Israel or among the churches? For neither did Israel continue with the renewal of Gilgal in their lives, nor do the churches turn to it to obey God faithfully, in everything, for that matter.
This is the reason the Lord has warned through His prophets, “This is what the Lord says….. ‘Seek Me and live; do not seek Bethel, do not go to Gilgal, do not journey to Beersheba. For Gilgal will surely go into exile, and Bethel will be reduced to nothing…….. THERE WILL BE WAILING IN ALL THE VINEYARDS, FOR I WILL PASS THROUGH YOUR MIDST’.” (Amos 5:4-17). Again, refer Hos 4:15, “Though you commit adultery, O Israel let not Judah become guilty. ‘Do not go to Gilgal; do not go to Beth Aven (or Bethel). And do not swear, ‘As surely as the Lord lives’.”
All the churches, like the Israelites have desecrated the sacred command of God. None will survive when the Lord passes through their midst. They will invoke the Name of the Lord, but in vain (egs. Lk 6:46-47, Matt 7:21-23), just as it will be true for those who boast in their patriarchy or in their flesh (Matt 3:7-10).
Conclusion: Even now, the Spirit warns and calls out, “Return, faithless Israel,” declares the Lord, “I will frown on you no longer, for I am merciful,” declares the Lord, “I will not be angry forever. Only acknowledge your guilt…” (Jer 3:12-13).
“So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today – to love the Lord your God and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul…” (Deut 11:13) , then He will be faithful to you and you will partake of His blessings and promises He has made for His faithful ones.
May God Bless You!
