Why or of whom was Cain afraid?

This is usually one of the first questions raised in opposition to the Word of God.  Because, it is one of the ‘a-ha’ moments for those who read the Word of God with the sole purpose of finding faults, or inconsistencies if you will.

Again, why?  Because Cain’s fear and how God responds to it by putting the protective seal on him (Gen 4:13-16) clearly leads one to understand that his fear was not unfounded for he was indeed likely to encounter other inhabitants on earth.  But who, since as it states his family members were the only ‘mankind’ about?

[Not knowing the answer does not mean one is justified to speculate or to arrive at one’s own conclusion since the Word of God has never failed to teach the Truth.  And if one has failed to learn further, it is only because one has not been faithful with what little one was entrusted in the first place.  Refer Lk 8:18, “Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him.”]

Let us recall from the Word that before the fall of man took place, the fall of Lucifer or Satan had taken place.  The mention of “Darkness” and “The Deep” in Gen 1:2 reveals exactly how early on it had occurred.

That is to say, it had occurred after God had created the heavens and the earth (Gen 1:1).  Only Heaven was inhabited at the time as God had only created the heavenly beings then.  Note Gen 1:2 which begins, “Now, the earth was formless and empty….”.

In the interval between Gen 1:1 and Gen 1:2b, we discover, as the Word of God further unravels to us, that Lucifer or Satan, who was created the most perfect of all heavenly beings (Ezek 28:12b-16, Isa 14:12-15) grew proud, and by misleading many angels he marshaled them alongside to raise a rebellion against God in order to usurp His Throne and exalt himself above God!  However, as was wont to conclude, they failed!!!

Consequently, they were driven out in disgrace and flung into the earth.  Hence towards the latter part of Genesis 1, verse 2, we see the mention of darkness and the deep.  Read Lk 10:18, where Jesus, the Word or the Son of God through whom all things were created (Jn 1:3)  testifies “He (Jesus) replied, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.’ “

Thus, Satan and his band of rebelling angels were flung to the then uninhabited or empty earth, some to wander about freely (eg. Job 1:6-7, Matt 12:45, Lk 8:27-31 etc.) and some to be held prisoners in THE DEEP and THE DARKNESS created exclusively for them until such time the purpose for which these were created is brought to fulfillment (Gen 1:2, Isa 45:7, 2 Pet 2:4, Rev 9:14-15 etc.), which purpose, as you will discover from the verses referred herein, is the Final Judgment of God. **

Therefore, when Cain was banished farther away from the presence of God, he feared for himself.  He was aware that these evil spirits roamed about freely (eg. Matt 12:43), and being banished from the presence of God farther he was likely to fall an easy prey.  Thus in answer to his plea to spare him the harsh punishment, God in His mercy puts a mark or seal on him to protect him from these evil spirits (Gen 4:15).

This is why among other things Eph 6:12 enlists these evil spirits in the list of our enemies, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood (for flesh and blood by themselves count for nothing), but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (meaning in the earth’s atmosphere or the universe).”

As such, it also teaches us the fact that since then men began to be assailed by evil spirits as they became more and more estranged from God.  So much so that by and large all mankind have turned into houses of demons (for example, read Matt 12:43-45).

For man, who once bore the likeness and image of God, has since his fall, most subtly but nevertheless most certainly and most willfully, been growing into the likeness of the Devil, the enemy of God (eg.Jn 8:44).  The relentless  opposition to God’s Word and His Holy Name among mankind is its standing testimony.  Read Isa 52:5b, “And all day long My Name is constantly blasphemed.”

Also understand that this is the reason why when the prophecy came to Mary yet again concerning Jesus at the temple, it revealed, Lk 2:34, “……. ‘This Child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and  TO BE A SIGN THAT WILL BE SPOKEN AGAINST SO THAT THE THOUGHTS OF MANY HEARTS WILL BE REVEALED (OR EXPOSED)…..’ ”  For sure enough God exposes all His enemies, all the anti-Christs of this world (Ps 110:1); and the Glorious and much-awaited Day of the Lord shall not come until He has exposed the last of them (eg. 2 Thess 2:3-4).

Let it be known here that just as God’s seal protected Cain from evil spirits then, He seals His faithful ones from His Judgment forever (egs. Ezek 9:4, Rev 7:3 etc.).  In that it is definitely very symbolic too.

It is important therefore that, like Cain, we come face to face with the predicament we are in and free ourselves while we may.  Only then we can hope to discern the Word of God and totally liberate ourselves victoriously from all our struggles mentioned in Eph 6:12  whether it be with rulers, authorities, powers of darkness or evil spirits.

UNDERSTAND THAT this is THE REASON God gives His power and authority to His servants to preach and teach the Word which comes accompanied with signs of deliverance for the demon possessed, the sick etc.  For example, read Lk 9:1-2, “When Jesus had called the Twelve together, He gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and He sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.”   Further, refer Matt 28:18, Mk 16:17-18, Lk 4:33-35, Lk 7:21, Lk 11:14 etc.

Like the holy and awesome transformation of the demon-possessed man from Gerasenes who had housed a legion of demons (Lk 8:29-35) or of Mary Magdalene from whom seven demons had come out (Lk 8:2), mankind needs to be freed of the demons that possess and destroy them before they can be brought to perfect and complete reconciliation with God.

P.s:  **In other words, learn and understand that before God continued with His creation work after first creating the heavens and the earth, the heavenly beings were created as also the Judgment, the darkness and the deep which includes the great waters, hell, Hades and the abyss.  The pause as we perceive it at first is the manifestation of His Love and Compassion just as we see it again in Rev 8:1, “When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.”  A sign of His inexplicable grief for the destruction that is to take place (eg. Lk 19:41).  And therefore He reveals His Great Salvation Plan as He unfolds the rest of His creation work to us – a demonstration of His great Love and Faithfulness towards all His creations.

This is the reason He then created Time and timed all His works from then on – for example, first day, second day and so on to teach us that He will accomplish all things at their Appointed Time, until Time itself is no more.  For then the eternal Sabbath rest of God shall come to pass for all the redeemed in His regenerated world of ‘New Heaven and New Earth’ where there will no more be the need for Judgment, sorrow, sighing or tears.  And darkness, the deep which includes the great waters – the seas and the oceans, hell, Hades or the abyss will be destroyed forever (eg. Rev 20:14, Rev 21:1 & 4).
