Who are the “sons of God” mentioned in Gen 6:2?

The term ‘sons of God’ has not only incited the idolatrous hearts of men at large to give vent to their imaginations but also exposed the deceitful arrogance of the so-called Christian men or elders in particular.

The former having failed to understand its true implications recreate mythological characters in the nature of man, giving full vent to their imaginations (Ps 73:7, Isa 65:2-7), and consign them to shrines to be worshiped (eg. Isa 44:12-13, Ezek 16:17 etc.).  And this ‘prostitution’ is true of every nation!

And the latter, having remained arrogant and unrepentant till date, choose to misinterpret the term only to showcase their superiority over the “daughters of men” and employ it to sell the LIE – that they are the only ones created in the image and likeness of God so that they in turn may be revered and honored in every manner that is befitting the Lord Himself – no less!

For egs., read Titus 3:1-2, “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.”, Col 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” , 1 Pet 3:5-6, “For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him ‘her master’…” etc., to quote a few.

BUT THE TRUTH IS pointed out by Jesus in Jn 10:34-35, “Jesus answered them, ‘Is it not written in your law, ‘I have said you are gods’? ….HE CALLED THEM ‘GODS’ TO WHOM THE WORD OF GOD CAME..….”

Clearly, God called sons of men ‘gods’ when he entrusted them with His Word for His Word was meant to empower them to work on His behalf.  For example, the calling of Moses.  Read Ex 7:1, “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘See, I have made you like ‘God’ to Pharaoh..’ “

Therefore, as we read on, beginning with Gen 6:2 referred to above, we find that Gen 6:3 and Gen 6:6 state and confirm that the same was said in reference to mortal men who were called to be His servants and not in reference to any superior being. Gen 6:3, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal…” and Gen 6:6, “The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and His heart was filled with pain.”

In spite of the fact that God’s Word came to them repeatedly, all men who were called to be sons of God continued to be unfaithful and treacherous.  This is the reason, Ps 82:6-7 confirms, “I said, ‘You are “gods”; you are all sons of the Most High.’  BUT YOU WILL DIE LIKE MERE MEN; YOU WILL FALL LIKE EVERY OTHER RULER.”

For they were not only unfaithful with God’s Word but also failed to acknowledge when His Word became Flesh and came to live with them.  Jn 10:36-38, “(Jesus continues), ‘What about the One whom the Father set apart as His very own and sent into the world?  Why then do you accuse Me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?  Do not believe Me unless I do what My Father does.  But if I do it, even though you do not believe Me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.”

Yes, Jesus is God’s Word incarnated in Flesh – the Complete and Perfect Revelation of the Father!  THE TRUE AND THE ONLY PERFECT SON OF GOD!  Very unlike any mortal man who only receives the Word of God as long as he or she is faithful.  But he or she will stop receiving it and even lose that which one thought one had, due to one’s unfaithfulness (Lk 8:18, Mk 4:24-25, Lk 16:10-11).  As for the Son of God, the very Incarnate of God’s Word, there is no unfaithfulness in Him – He is called the Faithful and the True.

Therefore, only by believing in Him (Jn 6:29) and partaking of His Word which is literally the Heavenly Manna (Jn 6:32-33, 50-51) broken for us (Matt 26:26-28) and abiding by It faithfully in word and deed (Jn 6:53-57), we may (irrespective of our gender), once again, be made worthy to be called “sons of God” (Matt 13:38, Rom 8:19 etc.).  Read Rom 8:13-17, “For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, BECAUSE THOSE WHO ARE LED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD ARE SONS OF GOD. For you did not receive a Spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of ‘sonship’.  And by Him we cry, “Abba, Father.”  The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.  Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Jesus Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory.”  That is right!  The word ‘son’ spiritually means ‘heir’ and has nothing to do with the gender of the person thus addressed.

Isa 63:8 reiterates, “He said, ‘SURELY THEY ARE MY PEOPLE, SONS WHO WILL NOT BE FALSE TO ME’; and so He became their Savior.”

And to such a wonderful calling and election, our response, quite unlike that of those who were false to Him, will certainly be, … YOU ARE OUR FATHER THOUGH ABRAHAM DOES NOT KNOW US OR ISRAEL ACKNOWLEDGE US; YOU, O LORD, ARE OUR FATHER, ‘OUR REDEEMER FROM OF OLD’ IS YOUR NAME.” (Isa 63:16).
