What is Scripture?

Jesus puts to rest all arguments, pretensions, doubts, queries, misconceptions and above all confusions concerning “Scriptures” ONCE AND FOR ALL when He CLEARLY DEFINES SCRIPTURE AS THAT WHICH TESTIFIES ABOUT HIM.

Refer Jn 5:39-40, “You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life.  These are the Scriptures that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have Life.”

That is right!  Scripture is Truth because it is the KNOWLEDGE OF GOD imparted by God Himself.  It is GOD-GIVEN and simply cannot originate from man.  Hence it is also called the Grace of God.  Eg.  Jn 16:15, “But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth.”  As such, Jn 6:45 testifies and reasserts concerning His people, “It is written in the prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ ”  In short without the Grace of God or the Word of God one cannot know God and without the knowledge of God one cannot hope to be perfected to unite with Him.  (Read the article “What is Grace of God?” from the website and be fully equipped with the truth.)

Like how it is demonstrated in Isa 50:47, “The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the Word that sustains the weary.  He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.”  Again read Matt 10:26-27, “So do not be afraid of them.  There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.  What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight, what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.”.   Also read Matt 13:52, “He said to them, ‘Therefore every teacher of the law WHO HAS BEEN INSTRUCTED about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of the storeroom new treasures as well as old.’”

IT IS that which is entrusted to His faithful servants or prophets as AN EVERLASTING WITNESS.  For example refer Isa 30:8. “GO NOW, WRITE IT ON A TABLET FOR THEM, INSCRIBE IT ON A SCROLL, THAT FOR THE DAYS TO COME IT MAY BE AN EVERLASTING WITNESS.”

Therefore, FIRST OF ALL, understand that the modern usage of words such as the ambiguous “inspired” or the cryptic “God-breathed” with relation to scripture are only meant to be misused so as to mislead.

IT IS THE GRACE OF GOD as described in Ps 45:2 concerning the Messiah,  “…and Your lips have been anointed with grace..”   Read Col 4:6, “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that YOU MAY KNOW HOW TO ANSWER EVERYONE.“   Just as Jesus reminds in Matt 5:13, “You are the salt of the earth.  But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?  It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.”  Likewise read 1 Tim 4:16, “Watch your life and doctrine closely.  Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”

IT IS IRREVOCABLE.  For example, read Isa 45:23, “By Myself I have sworn, My mouth has uttered in all integrity a Word that WILL NOT BE REVOKED:  Before Me every knee will bow; by Me every tongue will swear.”  Often one finds that in His compassion God does turn away from His wrath to give the penitent another chance.  So it might seem like God did revoke His word at the time.  However, in such cases one only succeeds in stalling it in one’s time but His words remain irrevocable and come to pass nevertheless.  For example as seen in the case of king Hezekiah (2 Chron 32:26, 2 Kings 20:19).

IT IS INFALLIBLE.  Meaning it does not fail but comes to fulfillment in His time, every single one of them!  Refer  Matt 24:35, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.”  For example, read Isa 55:11, “So is My Word that goes out from My mouth:  It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”  Likewise, Matt 5:18, “I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”   Note by fulfillment it also means to materialize before our eyes.  For example, when His Word was sent forth and all things created as also when This Word became Flesh to become the Perfect Atonement for the sins of the world.

IT IS LIFE.  It is viable and active; Life in abundance and eternal.  It does not die and hence IMPERISHABLE.   Refer Jn 6:63, “The Spirit gives Life; the flesh counts for nothing.  The words I have spoken to you are Spirit, and they are Life.”  This is the reason the disciples were right to acknowledge, “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.” (Jn 6:68).

IT IS HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, for only His righteousness can make us holy.  This is the reason Jesus instructs, “But seek first His Kingdom and His Righteousness..” (Matt 6:33).  And it is that which is given liberally and generously (Jas 1:5).  For example, read Matt 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”  Or Matt 7:7-8, “Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives, he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

IT IS UNCOMPROMISING.  Refer 2 Jn 9, Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in The Teaching has both the Father and the Son.”   This is the reason Jesus quotes prophet Isaiah concerning all who have compromised the Word of God to reinstate, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.  They worship Me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught BY MEN.” (Matt 15:8-9).

IT IS CONSISTENT AND UNCHANGING.  God is One, and His words are One and the Same – whether spoken directly or through His faithful prophets.  There is no contradiction here.  What the Father spoke, the Son fulfilled and reinstated, and it is that which the Spirit continues to remind and teach (eg. Jn 16:12-15).

Contradictions, confusions  and corruption are the works of men who PRETEND to be spokesmen of God for their own glory.   Jesus testifies in Jn 7:18, “He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the One who sent him is a man of truth, there is nothing false about him.”  FOR ALL THOSE WHO RIGHTLY FIND THE BIBLE QUITE CONFUSING, CONTRADICTORY AND EVEN CORRUPTED IN MANY AREAS IT IS BECAUSE WAYWARD AND REBELLIOUS MEN WHO PRETEND TO BE SHEPHERDS OF GOD’S FLOCK HAVE LIBERALLY TAMPERED WITH THE WORD OF GOD TO ADD, TO DELETE AND TO DISTORT IT BEYOND RECOGNITION!   However, BE WARNED, that it does not serve as an excuse to shun it because just as it is promised the Holy Spirit is here to guide us into all truth.  While it is for God to deal with these liars and deceivers, it is for us to put our trust entirely upon Him Who Alone is able to bring to fulfillment His Word, “..I will build My Church, and the gates of Hades (or hell) will not overcome it.” (Matt 16:18b).

FINALLY, IT IS IRREFUTABLE.  “For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.” (Lk 21:15).  This is the everlasting heritage of His faithful servants, as described in Isa 54:17, “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.  This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord.”   Just as Paul explains, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.  On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.  We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
