For Christ’s Sake
I thought I had lost it all:
Every time I smiled
In spite of tears,
Swallowed defeat
To let another triumph over,
Conceded love
Only to retrace for being in the way,
Let go
What was rightfully mine,
 And convicted self
 So another may walk acquitted.

Until I had begun to do them
 For Christ’s sake
Glad to sacrifice and move on.
 The gain became entirely mine
 By Heaven’s fair book-keeping
 The hundred-fold on earth
 And eternal life in abundance.
