THE CRUSHING BLOW OF TAXATION ON THE COMMON MAN
“‘What do you mean by crushing My people and grinding the faces of the poor?’, declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.” (Isa 3:15)
This article is written primarily in response to the growing angst among the common masses everywhere, who struggle to make ends meet amidst escalating prices and increasing number of taxes and additional levies that are introduced on a regular basis. Even clubbing these taxes under one umbrella does not change anything, does it?
Never mind how the economists wax ‘plenty’ and how the statisticians let climb their graphs, the fact is the poor are hand-bound before a pack of hoodlums and thieves who have broken all bounds and will not stop until the last penny is extorted from them so that they are literally thrown back to the mercy of these very same criminals who will then find it most convenient to slap their ‘plentiful’ and ‘easily available’ loans to ‘help’ meet even the most basic of their needs! (eg. Nah 3:16)
This is the reality everywhere. While the rich continue to thrive in the forefront of a nation’s economy, its backbone, which comprises of the poor and basically what is called ‘the common man’, is dragged along broken, if not absolutely paralyzed!
Like an ailing woman who languishes in her death-bed with a very heavily made-up face!
So, what is the need of the hour? And how may we face up to our reality and consciously work towards unburdening ourselves?
Rest assured, providing answers to these questions is the intent of this article, hoping and praying you will indeed benefit by it.
Firstly, recognize their Babylonian roots. It should hardly come as a surprise that the bane of TAXATION, as that of BUSINESS, is traced back to its Babylonian roots (Ezek 16:29, Isa 23:8 & 17, Rev 18:24, Matt 21:13) of man’s unfaithfulness towards God, detailed in my previous article.
As the Word of God testifies neither has a place in the Kingdom of God (Ezek 27:27, Zeph 1:11, Isa 56:7b).
For God who lavishes all good things upon all His creations, gives FREELY, GENEROUSLY AND IMPARTIALLY. For example, “As it is written, ‘He has scattered abroad His gifts to the poor; His righteousness endures forever. His horn will be lifted high in honor.’” (Ps 112:9).
And He teaches us TO DO LIKEWISE. Matt 10:8b, “Freely you have received, freely give.”
However, do men obey? No, man will only seek to exalt himself and claim proprietary over all that is truly God’s. He forgets that he is himself dependent on God. Yes, for all the boastings of man, his advancements in science and technology, his great leaps of progress in modernization etc., HE FORGETS he doesn’t even stand the chance of survival without God – without the faithful and surplus and impartial provisions of God!
Reckon it or not, but the undeniable fact is: THE ‘NAKED’ MAN NOT ONLY CANNOT SURVIVE WITHOUT GOD, BUT ALSO HE CANNOT EVEN HOPE TO MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING, SO THAT HE REMAINS DEPENDENT ON GOD.
Whether he builds his ‘glory’, like his castles, on ground or underground or underwater or above ground – on the mountains, in the air or even in the farthest skies (!), he can only work within the realm of God and with the bountiful supply and counsel of God (egs. Isa 28:23-29, Ps 104:14 etc.).
Just as the psalmist in his humbling testimony testifies in Ps 139:6-12, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee, from Your Presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there, if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea..… If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me.’ …..even the darkness will not be dark to you…”
DETHRONE MAN AND PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD:
YET, TO THEIR FOLLY, PEOPLE EVERYWHERE CONTINUE TO REJECT THEIR GOD, THEIR ONLY TRUE KING (1 SAM 8:7).
THEY LET MERE MORTALS ASSUME GOVERNANCE WHO HAVE ONLY YOKED THEM WITH BURDEN UPON BURDEN AND ROBBED THEM OF EVERYTHING THEY HAD – from lands to its yields to wealth to its profits to strength to its labor and last but not the least to their very children who from birth are being snuffed out of their life, their vigor, their joy and above all their God, saddled as they are with endless demands and expectations by their enslaving kingdoms! EXACTLY AS GOD HAD FOREWARNED!! (1 Sam 8:9-18)
These ruthless men – WHETHER YOUNG, OLD OR WOMEN (Isa 3:4-5 & 12), as the Word of God testifies against them neither acknowledge Him nor fear Him.
For example, read Jer 9:3, “They make ready their tongue like a bow, to shoot lies; it is not by truth that they triumph in the land. They go from one sin to another; they do not acknowledge Me,’ declares the Lord.”
And why lies? To serve as cover-ups for their obvious inabilities, their glaring inadequacies, not to mention their persistent wickedness and blatant mocking of God!
For example, note how price-rise and taxes promise betterment, without which apparently these governments can hardly function!
WELL, THE QUESTION THEN IS WHY DO WE LET THESE PAUPERS TAKE THE PLACE OF THE TRUE PRINCE OF PEACE (Isa 9:6-7), WHO IS TO COME, WHO WILL RULE THE WORLD WITH JUSTICE AND RIGHTEOUSNESS AND WHO WILL RESTORE THE FORTUNES OF HIS PEOPLE?!!
Oh! And, LEST WE FORGET, note how the churches not only serve as the spokespersons of these governments but also assume governance of their own among His people (eg. Rom 13:1-7, Eph 6:5-7, Col 3:23-24, Titus 2:9-10 etc.)!
Understand also that churches or religious bodies who SHAMELESSLY ADVOCATE ON BEHALF OF THESE powers and authorities of mortal men, do so only because they have a sizeable stake in the plunder too! Hence, their judgment is as certain as it was forewarned of the Lord.
For eg., Isa 3:14, “The Lord enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of the people; ‘It is you who have ruined My Vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses.’” Also read Ezek 34:1-4.
Therefore, for once, for your own sakes, ignore the lies you are accustomed to and read carefully and understand what the Word of God has established through His servant in Eph 6:12a: “For our struggle is …… against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world…” Recognize the real enemies. Flesh is not our enemy, but our weakness.
If still in doubt, read Ps 94:20, “Can a corrupt throne be allied with You – one that brings on misery by its decrees?”
And, Ps 110:6, “He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth.”
Think for yourselves, is it the mortal man who is sustaining the world? Is it he who is keeping the free supply of air, we breathe so freely, replenished with oxygen? Is it he who is causing the clouds to rain and lands to yield its harvest? Is it he who is feeding the nations from his personal supply? He cannot even feed himself without robbing you, then how will he feed you?
As for the boastings he makes of his so-called mass productions aided by technology, his self-glorifying findings, they have proved to be as harmful and poisonous as his lies (Ps 58:3-4, Ps 5:9)!
Yes, think! THINK, SO THAT WE MAY UNDERSTAND EXACTLY HOW AND WHERE WE WENT WRONG!
Understand, so that we may finally be able to reconcile ourselves to the Truth and prepare the Way of the Lord just as He exhorts us to. For as certain and infallible as His Word is, His Kingdom is close at hand. Only, before that there is the final and ‘most conclusive of them all’ exposure of man that awaits fulfillment. By the revelation of the ultimate man of lawlessness, which is the reason for the seeming delay, and which will surely come to pass just as all His words have until now.
Yet, the wait will not have been in vain for meantime He continues to gather all His own.
Therefore, stop trusting in man (Isa 2:22, Isa 23:9). Instead, turn to God; put your trust in Him and His infallible promises. How?
BE STILL AND WAIT FOR THE LORD:
Yes, quite literally, be still and wait for Him. Then you will see the glory of God. Remember we do not fight with the weapons of this world. We do not take up arms or stage protests. Instead, we are called to hold on to the Truth and persevere in it. Persevere in it, so that we may save ourselves and all our hearers (1 Tim 4:16).
Understand that, while we endure patiently and persevere faithfully in His Word amidst all our struggles, our persecutors, our tormentors stand condemned and await their Judgment:
“I will put it into the hands of your tormentors, who said to you, ‘Fall prostrate that we may walk over you.’ And you made your back like the ground, like a street to be walked over.” (Isa 51:23).
Recognize the wolves in sheep’s clothing. As Jesus instructs, recognize them by their fruits so you may be on your guard.
By choosing to defend themselves on the basis that Jesus has Himself set an example by paying tax (Matt 17:27), they ignore the Truth that it was not before He reminds and reinstates that “The sons are exempt.” (Matt 17:26). Consequently they become twice as guilty. Churches and Christian organizations included!
Because, whilst continuing to advocate (Rom 13:7) and reinforcing taxation or extortion, never mind by what fancy name it is called, under the same pretext, they remain guilty of DISOBEYING the rest of the commandment concerning it, which is: “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, AND TO GOD WHAT IS GOD’S.” (Matt 22:21)
In fact, they fail at the very outset itself. Firstly, note how they ascribe their wealth to the glory of man by imprinting on them the heads or images of their respective Caesars! In so doing, they have themselves set apart their wealth, as also themselves (Rev 13:16-18), and dedicated them for the glory of mortal men.
For the said verse (Matt 22:21) clearly draws the line of demarcation between Caesars of this world and God, and likewise, between what is Caesar’s and what is God’s.
[And lest, anyone should misinterpret it and presume to install ‘the image of God’, as men are wont to, be warned by the Word of God, “To whom, then will you compare God? Whatimage will you compare Him to?” (Isa 40:18)]
Secondly, as for all the other ‘goodness’ of God to which they REMAIN forever indebted to Him, how will they ever begin to repay? Will not the Lord hold them accountable? Then, will all the wealth they have amassed suffice to repay Him? And that too, along with like taxes and levies as they had imposed on His people?
As for the churches and so-called Christian organizations, who like their worldly counterparts, love to lord it over (Matt 20:25), how will they establish their innocence? By the fruits of their corrupt and misleading teachings?
Or, for example, how do they expect God to repay them who lavishes His payment and rewards equally on all His servants, irrespective of their gender, the nature of their works or their time of joining (Matt 20:1-16)? Have they not been robbing Him by robbing His poor? So, do they who claim to know Him and take His holy Name, truly ascribe to God all that is duly His (Rev 5:12)? No, indeed not!
So it shall be just as the Lord has declared, Lk 14:24, “I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of My banquet.” Also read Isa 23:17-18.
For, even though the tax collectors and the prostitutes REPENT and forcefully advance to take possession of the Kingdom of God, these do not! (Matt 21:31b-32)
Therefore, even as you read this, return to your God and wait for Him. For His Day of wrath will surely come. Remember, vengeance is His, so wait for Him to carry it out at the Appointed Time. Read Isa 23 and understand how He has allowed these thieves to be honored publicly, literally earmarking them for His Judgment as it were!
Put your trust in God. He will sustain you. Keep away from the cursed path of trusting man (Jer 17:5-6). STOP VOTING FOR MAN. For in doing so, you become guilty of having rejected the Lord your King and you then inadvertently become party to the Judgment that is going to come on all those who have usurped the glory and place due only to God.
Read Isa 10:1-4, “Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of My people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless. What will you do in the Day of Reckoning, when disaster comes from afar? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your riches? Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives or fall among the slain. Yet for all, His anger is not turned away, His hand is still upraised.”
